| After the successful delivery of
a number of projects, mainly centred around manufacturing efficiency
improvement he was promoted into a quality management and then
a shop floor management role, enabling him to increase his experience
in what would now be called ‘Lean Manufacturing’
techniques.
Karl was then transferred to BAE’s Prestwick site
in Scotland to recruit and train a team of internal business
improvement engineers. Here he enjoyed a great deal of success
in the deployment of ‘Lean’ across a wide range
of manufacturing project and support functions over a four
year period.
In 1999 he transferred to the Samlesbury site, in Preston,
part of the Military Aircraft and Aerostructures business
of BAE where he assumed responsibility for the Manufacturing
Capital Investment activities of its six sites. In 2000 Karl
took on a further two roles after the merger with Marconi
Electronic Systems and the formation of BAE SYSTEMS. One of
these was as the Lead Professional for Manufacturing Engineering
on the Samlesbury site and the other as the Resources Management
and Learning & Development executive for the Manufacturing
Engineers across the military aircraft sites.
In January 2003 Karl took on the leadership of the UK Lean
Aerospace Initiative where he is looking to achieve the biggest
possible impact from the adoption of Lean across the Aerospace
sector.
